fern stitch

I love fern stitch! It’s simple to do and so effective and pretty. It can be used for plants or for decorations on dresses, houses etc. I used 2 strands here but you can experiment with different numbers of threads. and you can even do the leaves in a different colour to the stalk.

  1. Begin with a back stitch for the very top of the fern as in pictures 1 and 2.

  2. Now bring your needle up at the top of one of the leaves (picture 3) and make a stitch by bringing your needle back down in the same hole at the base of your first stitch (picture 4).

  3. Next do the same thing with the second leaf.

  4. Now make a back stitch for the next part of the stalk and stitch the leaves in the same way.

  5. Carry on down the stalk ending with a back stitch.
