First pull your thread through to the front of the fabric, making sure it is taut.
wrap the thread around the needle
Push the needle back through the fabric very close to where you brought the needle out, but not in the same place or you may end up pulling the whole thing back through. The trick is to keep the loose thread taut with your free hand, but not so taut that you can’t pull your needle through.
Let go of the thread and pull the rest gently through to form your knot.
French knots do tend to take a bit of practice but in the end they are worth it. They are such a decorative stitch, lovely to use for a small flower or berry. If you want a larger knot then use more threads. I tend to use 3 strands for the knots in the lavender girls’ hair.
